According to Susan Barton of Bright Solutions for Dyslexia: ”Dyslexia is the most common reason a bright student will struggle with reading, spelling, or written composition. However, it is not the only reason. Until you know for sure why a child is struggling, you will not know the best way to help them.”

A child can be professionally diagnosed with dyslexia as early as five-and-a-half years old. The Barton Reading and Spelling System is an Orton-Gillingham influenced approach to reading and spelling. It has a total of 10 levels:
  1. Phonemic Awareness
  2. Consonants and Short Vowels
  3. Closed Syllables and Units
  4. Syllable Division & Vowel Teams
  5. Prefixes and Suffixes
  6. Six Reasons for Silent-E
  7. Vowel-R Syllables
  8. Advanced Vowel Teams
  9. Influences of Foreign Languages
  10. Greek Words & Latin Roots
