According to Susan Barton of Bright Solutions for Dyslexia: ”Dyslexia is the most common reason a bright student will struggle with reading, spelling, or written composition. However, it is not the only reason. Until you know for sure why a child is struggling, you will not know the best way to help them.”
A child can be professionally diagnosed with dyslexia as early as five-and-a-half years old.
The Barton Reading and Spelling System is an Orton-Gillingham influenced approach to reading and spelling. It has a total of 10 levels:
- Phonemic Awareness
- Consonants and Short Vowels
- Closed Syllables and Units
- Syllable Division & Vowel Teams
- Prefixes and Suffixes
- Six Reasons for Silent-E
- Vowel-R Syllables
- Advanced Vowel Teams
- Influences of Foreign Languages
- Greek Words & Latin Roots
